緊急利下げ
米連邦準備制度理事会（ＦＲＢ）のバーナンキ議長は十七日、議会下院予算委員会の公聴会で、サブプライム住宅ローン関連の金融機関の損失額について、焦げ付きや住宅差し押さえが今後増え、数千億ドル（数十兆円）規模に拡大する可能性があるとの認識を示した。 その上で「追加的な緩和政策が必要かもしれない。必要に応じて一層の追加措置を取る用意がある」とあらためて強調。ＦＲＢが今月二十九、三十日の連邦公開市場委員会（ＦＯＭＣ）で、フェデラルファンド（ＦＦ）金利の誘導目標を大幅に引き下げる可能性を示唆した。
議長は「財政出動（による景気刺激策）は経済成長の助けになるとの考えに同意する」と述べ、ブッシュ大統領が打ち出す景気対策を支持。「遅すぎると経済活動を支援しない」と時機を逃さず景気対策を講じるべきだと強調した。ただ「はっきりと臨時的なものにすべきだ」とも述べ、米国の財政状態は高齢化や医療費の膨張で構造的に赤字体質であるとし、財政健全化にも配慮するよう求めた。
サブプライムローン関連の金融機関の損失は「現時点で（表面化したのは）一千億ドル程度とみている」と述べた。
米経済については「見通しは悪化し続けている」と厳しい判断を打ち出した。物価上昇圧力は「うまく抑制されている」とし、今後は鈍化するとの見通しを示した。
